One of the top stories of the day was the return of ADCC and IBJJF world champion Mario Sperry. Sperry competed in the master 5 super-heavyweight division and made a triumphant return, taking the gold in the weight division in his first gi competition in 18 years.
However, black
belt featherweight legend 'Megaton' Dias stole the show by beating Sperry in
the final of the absolute division to win double gold.
Their match was
a hard-fought, dramatic affair. Megaton pulled guard and scored with an early
sweep. Sperry pressured forward, but Megaton would score another two later in
the match. Sperry clawed back two with about one minute in the match, but it
was Megaton who was declared the victor 4-2.
Earlier, Megaton had just one match at master 5 featherweight, but won in impressive fashion with a very fast armbar from spider guard.

In the master 6
medium-heavyweight division Brian Beauchamp won his 9th gold medal at this
tournament. Incredibly, Beauchamp has never been scored upon at master worlds.
Luis "Bebeo" Duarte, also won two matches in his return and won gold in the master 5 ultra-heavyweight category. The old-school Carlson Gracie rep won gold in the medium heavyweight division in 1996.

Master 3 had the
largest divisions in number and saw some tough competition throughout. Fan
favorite Eduardo Telles went down in the first round of the medium-heavyweight
bracket, losing to Ronaldo Chaves of Checkmat by kneebar. Chaves would go on to
finish 3rd. Wagney Fabiano and Cassio Werneck would both put together grueling
runs to the top of the podium in stacked light and middleweight brackets.
Two of the feel good stories of the day were Clayton Almeida at master 6 ultra-heavyweight Rafael Lovato Sr. at master 6 light. Almeida is the father of ten-time IBJJF world champion Marcus 'Buchecha' Almeida, and Lovato Sr. is obviously the father of IBJJF world champ Rafael Lovato Jr.
Almeida would take home the gold medal in his division, and Lovato Sr. would finish with bronze after losing a ref decision in the semi-final.
